Because of on-going restrictions and concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic, the High Adventure (Scouts 14+ and First Class+) bike ride from Pittsburg to DC has been cancelled and replaced with an in-state four day ride without overnight camping.
Day 1 July 11th: We will be starting in Glenmont, Oh up in Holmes county. You will be transporting your Scout there. It is about a 60 mile trip. If you want to transport another Scout that is up to you. We (Troop 123) cannot. We will ride down the Ohio Erie Trail (OET) to Centerburg, Oh. We will stop for lunch in Gambier. You will need to meet us in Centerburg and pick up your Scout for the night.
Day 2 July 12th: Drop off your Scout at the square in Sunbury for a ride along the OET, Alum Creek, Scioto, and Camp Chase trails to Battelle Darby Metro Park. We will be stopping for lunch in Wolfe Park. You will pick up your Scout in the parking lot of the park South of Alkire Rd.
Day 3 July 13th: Drop off your Scout at the trail head on Alkire Rd for today’s ride along the OET to Xenia, Oh. We will not be camping in Xenia. With only 1 Scout allowed in a tent and a total of 19 people going, that is too much gear to transport and the Historical Society is not that big. We will be stopping for lunch in South Charleston. You will pick up your Scout in the parking lot of the Xenia Station.
Day 4 July 14th: Drop off your Scout at the same location that you picked him up in Xenia and we will ride the OET to Cincinnati. We will stop for lunch in South Lebanon. We will end at Avoca Park where you will pick up your Scout.
In conclusion we will be riding 4 days for about 200 miles along trails from Glenmont to Cincinnati. You will be dropping off and picking up your Scout along the way and we will plan on having a “lunch” break around half way on each leg (see details above). We will need help with getting food and drinks to these points which Kathy Domer is coordinating
Shakedowns rides: There will be 2 shakedown rides before this trip, both will be 50 mile ride on trails. The first one will be on June 27th and the second will be on July 5th. The first shakedown will be on the trail from Johnstown to Newark and back to Johnstown. The second shakedown will be from Mr. Canini’s house to downtown along the Olentangy trail, across downtown to the Alum Creek trail then to Three Creeks Metro park and back to his house. We will start both of these in the morning by 9:00 so that we are back before the heat of the day. Any adults that plan on riding the bike trip need to ride the shakedowns also. We will stop for lunch at the turnaround point on each ride. The first ride will be at the OSU Newark Campus and the second one will be at 3 Creeks Metro Park parking area.
